Online students are getting younger and spending more time studying

HOBOKEN, NJ —

The number of students enrolled in online college programs has increased in recent years, even as total college enrollment has declined. To help education leaders understand why more and more students are turning to online educationDynamic, higher education marketing experts, surveyed over 1,000 currently enrolled and soon to be enrolled students. The resulting report, Online University Students 2022reveals the needs and preferences of online college students in 2022 and examines changes in recent years.

The researchers confirmed many long-standing developing trends and discovered new emerging trends that may accelerate the exit from the recent pandemic. Students are always driven by career outcomes and their biggest challenge remains figuring out how to pay for their college education. Compared to students five or more years ago, today’s online students are younger, more likely to work full-time and spend more time studying. Additionally, these students almost universally recognize the benefits and value of online learning, and most intend to enroll in online programs in the future.

Bruce Douglas, EducationDynamic CEO, said, “The landscape of higher education has changed dramatically over the past few years. While overall college enrollment has continued to decline, we have seen growth in online program enrollment. However, even though the overall outlook for online education has improved dramatically, many schools are finding it increasingly difficult to take advantage of this growth opportunity. We wanted to help them understand who is signing up for online education – and why. With online education now taking its place at the forefront of the minds of students and educators, it will be more important than ever for higher education leaders to fully understand today’s online students and tomorrow. Now in its 11th year, the 2022 Online Student Report provides a comprehensive analysis of today’s online learner and reveals why many students are increasingly turning to online programs when pursuing an education.
