1. Reduction of total costs

Many students opt for online courses due to lower overall costs. Although tuition per credit may be the same as on campus, students will not have to pay for on-campus housing or meal plans, as well as travel expenses.

2. More flexibility

Many students may feel that the flexibility that comes with online learning can better suit their lifestyle. Many online courses run asynchronously, which means you can study around your schedule.

3. Improve time management

Juggling work, life and school is not an easy thing to do. Employers recognize this and admire the time management skills needed, which can be beneficial when applying for positions after graduation.

4. Better global prospects

Students in online programs come not only from the United States, but from all over the world. As a result, class discussions offer a wider range of perspectives, helping you to improve your own cross-cultural understanding and enabling you to interact with different nationalities and cultures.

5. Acquire technical skills

Your online degree also equates to strong technical skills, a definite plus for any job seeker. You will likely need to use digital learning materials, familiarize yourself with new tools and software, and troubleshoot common problems, all of which will benefit you on the job.

TUCSON (KVOA) — New details about an online school the University of Arizona acquired in 2020 have come to light.

In March, a California judge ordered Ashford University and its parent company to pay $22 million in penalties for deceptive students.

News 4 Tucson investigators are looking at where the money is going.

While the court issued sanctions against Ashford University, it did not award restitution. This money will therefore not help people pay off their student debt.

“It’s very frustrating, you feel totally abandoned,” said Tucsonan Stacey Sanders Gibson.

Gibson has student loan debt of $90,000. She said Ashford University cared more about enrollment numbers than truthful advice.

“We have this and that, and you don’t have to do anything except sign,” Gibson said.

His online master’s degree cost $40,000 in 2012. However, the interest continues to accrue.

“I believe they scammed a lot of people,” she said.

After Gibson’s story aired, more than a dozen Ashford students contacted News 4 Tucson investigators to share similar stories of false promises.

“I graduated in 2014 with over $100,000 in debt from the online masters program,” Erica P. wrote. “To this day, I have no career from the degree I got it and all I have to show is $700 a month in student loan payments.”

“The entire financial system was horrible. I am currently in school debt with no job assistance,” Latonya F wrote. “I am currently working $8 minimum wage with a Ph.D.”

In March, a judge imposed fines of $22 million on Ashford University and its then-parent company, Zovio. It did not provide restitution to former students.

So where will the millions go?

In an email, California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s press office told News 4 Tucson investigators in part, “The court has imposed penalties, which will be apportioned between the state and San County. Diego, in accordance with state law, and used for consumer protection enforcement. The court’s findings provide a solid basis for the Department of Education to award Ashford students student loan relief. federal authorities, and we hope that Secretary Miguel Cardona will act quickly to provide this relief.

“I wish they would reach out to the students they’ve overburdened and haven’t helped because I’m pretty sure they’re struggling,” Gibson said. “And help them with these student loans, pay half of them or have them cut, do something.”

Even though Ashford was renamed the University of Arizona Global Campus in 2020, the transition has not been smooth.

Last month, more than 3,000 student veterans were told they could no longer use GI Bill benefits to pay for tuition and housing after UAGC moved its headquarters from California to Arizona.

But last week, school officials patched what they called a “bureaucratic snafu” that halted their ability to accept federal funds.

UAGC says it expects no disruption to student benefits, tuition or costs.

Online university tuition fees during the Covid pandemic spark a rise in complaints as students say they were unhappy with their ‘learning experiences’ and some struggled with technology during the exams

  • Many say ‘blended learning’ is better for students because they can review lessons
  • Data shows OIA received 2,763 student complaints in 2021, up 6%
  • They said some students found they weren’t getting ‘the learning they expected’

Remote Classes during the pandemic have prompted a record number of complaints against universities, the figures reveal.

It comes as some universities still insist on continuing online classes, despite growing student anger.

Many argue that ‘blended’ learning – a mix of face-to-face and online – is better for students because it allows them to review lessons.

But data from the Office of the Independent Higher Education Adjudicator (OIA) tells a different story.

The body received 2,763 complaints from students in 2021, up 6% from 2020 levels and 17% more than in 2019.

The OIA said “some students found they were not getting the learning experiences they reasonably expected”, affected by “the cumulative impact of the pandemic and industry action”.

He also revealed that some students had struggled with technology, “particularly during online timed exams”.

A number struggled to get the technology to work, while for others poor typing skills had affected their performance.

The overall financial compensation awarded to students in 2021 was £1,304,379, “significantly higher than in previous years”.

The largest single payment was just over £68,000, while 63 students received over £5,000.

The proportion of complaints related to the pandemic has increased since 2020, to 37% of complaints, compared to 12% in 2020.

In total, 27% of complaints were considered “justified”.

The government has pledged to crack down on remote learning this summer.

Yesterday, Universities Minister Michelle Donelan said: ‘I have been very clear that students deserve quality, transparency and value.

Students deserve fair treatment and it is good to see this process working with compensation payments rising to over £1.3million and more complaints confirmed than ever before.

Walden University is the subject of a class-action lawsuit for allegedly implementing “multi-party discriminatory” practices and misrepresentation of course lengths that particularly victimized black male and female students.

Walden is a private, online, for-profit institution of higher learning headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota that offers 70 degree programs.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Maryland by the National Student Legal Defense Network in January, represents several former students who claim Walden’s misconduct has trapped minority students in particular into cycles of ‘debt and desperation’. . The New York Times reports.

He argues that Walden deliberately lengthened the time students took to complete their graduate studies in the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program by making them wait for approval from a three-member committee.

be described in the trial as a “multi-part discriminatory, fraudulent, deceptive and dishonest scheme” set up by the university, the students claim that they had to re-enroll for semesters and continue to pay tuition during the process of approval.

Because the number of capstone credits required to graduate was misrepresented and Walden allegedly lured students under the “false promise that they could quickly earn a graduate degree,” the lawsuit says the school has overcharged students by more than $28.5 million.

“Walden lured students in with the promise of an affordable degree, then chained them to increase profits,” Aaron Ament, president of the National Student Legal Defense Network, said in a statement. “As if that weren’t enough, Walden specifically targeted black students and women for this predatory program, masking his discrimination with a focus on diversity.”

The students claim the university violated consumer protection laws, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and misrepresented the “cost and credits” needed to graduate, according to the NY Times.

The lawsuit accuses Walden of “reverse redlining”, which targets “minority communities with its advertising and personalization to appeal to women,” the outlet said.

Notably, Walden presents itself as an institution that champions diversity. The website claims that the university is ranked number one among 380 accredited institutions for awarding doctorates to African-American students” and also first “for awarding graduate degrees in multiple disciplines to African-American students. Americans”.

A spokeswoman for Walden responded to questions about the lawsuit by saying the university would “continue to work to ensure that groups of people who have traditionally been underrepresented in higher education know that it is possible to obtain an education and expand their access to opportunities at Walden University.”

This essay article is part of a Narcity Media series. The opinions expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Narcity Media.

The transition from in-person classes to online learning has been a difficult time of adjustment for students in Ontario — and beyond.

I struggled to balance my classes and maintain my sanity as the change in environment drastically set me back as a student.

Online and in-person learning are two different playing fields, and I knew I had to improve my habits before my grades suffered badly.

If you’re a student struggling to stay on track or have a severe case of Zoom fatigue, here are five things that have seriously improved my approach to online learning.

1. Renovate your space

It is essential to have a dedicated space to study when you are at home.

Instead of the classroom, we need to use our imagination to create a space for doing homework and listening to lectures. I had limited physical space to separate my workplace from my bedroom, but since I was also struggling to study away from home due to the winter blues and the pandemic, I knew that I had to adapt.

I renovated my bedroom into a comfortable – but not too relaxing – sanctuary suitable for a student who also needs to relax after hours spent online.

I have a desk area where everything from textbooks, notes, highlighters, etc. is organized at my disposal. I listen to lectures and do my homework away from bed, lest I destroy the vibrations and ensure enough sunlight in my bedroom to keep me grounded. I have created a balance that suits my lifestyle and needs as a student by turning my bedroom into a study space.

2. Contact others when needed

Through virtual learning, there is a loss of social contact. Reaching out to others has been challenging, whether it’s chatting with peers or interacting socially between teachers and students during office hours. However, seeking support from the people around you is key to surviving online learning.

As a very shy person who finds it difficult to approach others, I have found it helpful to use my school email, Zoom private messaging, and creating chat messages to ask questions . Response time varies by individual, but by putting yourself forward and communicating with others, you’re already a head start in taking charge of your learning.

3. Forget about multitasking

Unfortunately, multitasking is nearly impossible to accomplish with good results. I admit to being on my phone browsing social media when I should be paying attention to the conference.

Yet, I saw how it was affecting my attention span and my grades and decided that this lifestyle was no longer for me. I now remove all distractions from my study area. When I’m in class, I focus on writing my notes and even go so far as to install website blockers on my laptop and phone to curb cravings and improve my productivity.

Another way multitasking can appear is through homework. Stick to one thing, complete the task at hand, and move on to the next – no need to do it all at once.

4. Improve time management skills

Staring at a computer screen all day is not ideal for anyone. I suffered from eyestrain and headaches because I was constantly on call and doing homework nonstop. It’s tiring and numbing, benefiting no one despite the work invested in school projects.

I made sure to schedule all the exact times needed for online teaching in my physical planner and online calendar to solve this problem. I then schedule breaks between classes to avoid my laptop and stretch or eat something.

It may seem like a small thing, but it has had a positive impact on me and reduced the amount of stress my body experiences from being in front of a computer all day.

Jenn Kasiama thinks going out is key to staying productive online.jenn kasiama

5. Go out

One of the best ways to recharge your batteries while “going to college” online is to get outside. I spent time with my friends and family when possible. I spent time alone in nature. I read books.

The connection with people and the real life experiences gave me the psychological energy I needed to follow the online learning.

What you do outside of class is just as important as what you do during it. Be with other people who can relate to your stress — they’re probably going through their own version of it too — and by talking about it, you might get to a point where you can laugh about it. Sharing with others is key to helping you prepare to come back online.

The thing about “living” online is that it’s easy to forget there’s still a great “life” outside of your laptop. For me, being engaged in activities and strategies that reminded me of this helped me tremendously to cope.

Western Governors University (WGU) has partnered with McDonald’s and the company’s independent franchisees to help employees earn their degrees.

The alliance was announced March 1 at Westport Plaza McDonald’s in Maryland Heights, one of 38 McDonald’s in the St. Louis area owned by brothers Nolan and Francis Ruiz.

The two brothers were at the launch event with Governor Mike Parson, WGU President Scott Pulsipher, and Kassie Johner, a McDonald’s employee who is studying to earn her Bachelor of Commerce degree at WGU.

Parson, whose first job was pumping petrol and fixing tyres, said: “Nothing will drive me up the wall more than someone making a reference to someone flipping burgers for a living. “

Citing statewide statistics on college degrees, Parson spoke about the goal of the program.

“When you look at where we’re headed in the workforce in this state, why we’re so aggressive with this is…really the fundamentals of the American Dream. It’s made for everyone. But you (have to) give people the opportunity to enter the workforce,” Parson said. “The truth is, 70% of the people in this state don’t have a college degree – it’s your workforce that’s out there. These are the people who need to get into the job industry, they need a little help getting started.

McDonald’s Corporation’s Archways to Opportunity program offers employees the opportunity to graduate from high school, receive initial tuition assistance, access free education or career counseling services, and to learn English as a second language.

Since its launch in 2015, the program has improved access to education for nearly 2,000 Missourians and awarded approximately $5 million in tuition assistance.

“Our partnership with WGU provides even more opportunities for our restaurant employees to pursue their education and career aspirations,” said Lisa Schumacher, director of education strategies at McDonald’s.

Through this partnership, McDonald’s employees and their families receive a 5% tuition discount and are eligible for WGU-funded scholarships ranging in value from $2,000 to $10,000.

This, combined with the help of Archways to Opportunity, means that students can travel to WGU at little cost – or possibly for free.

“We already know how affordability is a barrier to accessing post-secondary education for so many, and so the strength of partnerships like this is so significant,” said the WGU President. , Scott Pulsipher.

Because WGU offers courses entirely online, it can be a good alternative for students who cannot travel to a traditional college campus every day. The cost of tuition is also relatively low.

“A lot of what (we’re) really designed for is individuals like the ones you’ll find at McDonald’s…individuals who need our ability to reach out to them and teach them where they are,” said Pulsipher.

Kassie Johner was actually taking classes at another college before enrolling at WGU, but those classes didn’t fit into her schedule. She decided to try WGU because of her mother, who also attended WGU and graduated with a degree in business management.

“I saw how easy it was for her to work and go to school with less stress and a lot more happiness,” Johner said.
